Spice Up Summer with Salsa
Share
Let’s face it, who hasn’t scarfed down an entire jar of salsa in one sitting? Admittedly, salsa is one of my all-time favorite condiments. I’m not one of those people who likes salsa on eggs, but I love all varieties of salsa with crisp tortilla chips. From the more traditional restaurant-style salsa to salsa verde and pico de gallo, salsa is both nutritious and delicious.
For centuries, salsa has been packaged in glass containers. As the safest, most environmentally-friendly packaging, glass containers are impermeable and air-tight, so salsa stays fresh for exceedingly long periods of time. And, glass is also the only widely used food packaging granted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) status of “GRAS” – Generally Regarded As Safe.
With so many options on store shelves, salsa brands are creating product differentiation by packaging their products in beautiful glass jars that let customers see the vibrant colors of their salsa. This summer, BOB wanted to share some of his favorite salsas packaged in glass jars.
On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina Medium Salsa
For a traditional yet satisfyingly smooth salsa, try out On The Border’s Medium Salsa. This salsa features all-natural ingredients, no preservatives and is gluten free. With balanced smooth flavors and a hint of heat, it’s the perfect middle ground. On The Border offers Mild, Medium, Chunky and Organic varieties, but Medium is my go-to.
Drew’s Organics Chipotle Lime Salsa
Drew’s Chipotle Lime Salsa combines chipotle peppers with lime juice, sea salt and dried poblano peppers for a smoky yet balanced flavor. This organic salsa is free from the eight major allergens and is perfect for burritos or taco night.
Stonewall Kitchen Fire Roasted Salsa
Stonewall Kitchen’s Fire Roasted Salsa blends charred vegetables for a smoky depth enhanced by cilantro, lime, and a touch of apple for sweetness. It’s a versatile topping for grilled fish, chicken, or classic tortilla chips.
Gunther’s Chesapeake Bay Style Crab Salsa
Gunther’s Chesapeake Bay Style Crab Salsa stands out with its seafood twist, featuring Blue Crab claw meat, bell peppers, diced tomatoes, chili peppers, and a secret spice blend. The glass jar beautifully showcases the rich crab pieces and colorful ingredients.
Homemade Salsa
Some people prefer to make homemade salsa with fresh garden ingredients. My aunt makes an amazing salsa that she stores in Mason jars and shares with family. Here’s her simple and flavorful recipe:
Ingredients:
- 3–4 medium tomatoes, diced
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 1 large bell pepper (any color), finely diced
- 3 jalapeño peppers, finely minced
- ½ cup chopped cilantro
- 2 large garlic cloves, pressed
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Mix all veggies in a medium bowl and drain any excess juice.
- Stir in lime juice and season lightly with salt and pepper.
Tip: Use a hand-cranked food processor for quick prep—add jalapeños first, then onion, cilantro, and bell peppers. Dice tomatoes by hand to keep their natural juices intact.
If you or someone you know makes their own salsa, we’d love for you to share your recipe in the comments below. Or, next time you’re at the grocery store, try one of the salsas mentioned above. Enjoy the rest of your summer with a fresh jar of salsa!
Bon appétit!
