Beer Tripping: Spring Break Craft Beer Destinations

By: Paula Polei

Beer has always been a great travel companion — whether on the beach, poolside, or around a campfire. Many craft beer lovers even travel hundreds of miles to visit their favorite breweries and festivals. With Spring Break just around the corner, BOB is sharing his top “beercation” destinations! Instead of the usual craft beer capitals like Seattle, Portland, and Denver, here are a few underrated cities that deserve a spot on your beer travel map.

Beer tasting on vacation

Columbus, Ohio

Home to the Ohio State Buckeyes, Columbus is full of standout brewpubs and beer bars. One you can’t miss is North High Brewing, where you can become a brewmaster for a day. Their Brew-on-Premises setup lets you create your own hand-crafted beer with guidance from expert brewers. Just plan your visit accordingly — they open at 2:00 p.m. Monday–Thursday and noon on weekends.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Named “Beer City USA” by USA Today in 2015, Grand Rapids is home to over 30 local breweries and a thriving beer culture. Don’t leave without visiting Founders Brewing, one of the world’s top-ranked breweries. Try their iconic All Day IPA for balanced aromatics and a crisp finish, or indulge in the decadent Breakfast Stout, brewed with flaked oats, chocolate, and coffee.

Asheville, North Carolina

Boasting the most breweries per capita in the U.S., Asheville is a must-visit for beer lovers. Among its many gems, Hi-Wire Brewing stands out with its fun circus theme and approachable beers like Hi-Pitch IPA and Bed of Nails Brown. The taproom opens at 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and noon on Saturdays, with tours offered Fridays at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Washington, D.C.

Beyond its monuments and museums, the nation’s capital has become a hub for craft beer. Atlas Brew Works offers tours, tastings, and growlers-to-go from their D.C. facility. Favorites include the Ponzi American IPA and 1500 South Cap Lager — a local twist on a German classic. Tours run Saturdays at 2:00, 4:00, and 6:00 p.m., and the tasting room is open Friday through Sunday.

Craft beer flight and tasting glasses

Coming to a Town Near You

With more than 4,100 breweries now open across the U.S., it’s easier than ever to find a local craft beer experience. According to the Brewers Association, 75% of U.S. adults live within 10 miles of a brewery — so great beer might be closer than you think.
